12 hours of thethering, and there's still 62% of battery left

To test how well my iPad with MyWi 4.0 can be a WiFi hotspot (thethering the 3G signal), I did an experiment today.  I first had my iPad charge fully, then I turned on the MyWi Thethering.  Then I used my iPod Touch to access the Wifi provided by iPad to do basic stuff on and off, like downloading and installing apps, stream music thru Zumocast, update To Do list, check email and so on.  Notice that I set the WiFi signal to the lowest (30%).

After 12 hours, I check the battery life of my iPad.  62% of battery still available.  Not bad.  Now I can count on using it on the road all the time.

One more thing: ever since I downgraded the OS from iOS 4.x to iOS 3.1.2 on my iPod Touch second generation, life is never better.  The response of the device is snappy, and everything just work great.  Sure some apps don't run, but not anything I rely on.  In fact I am so happy that I didn't waste on the 3rd gen or the latest 4th gen.

MyWi 4.0 and HTC Desire doesn't seem to get along

I was pretty excited by my iPod Touch successfully working with my iPad thethered with MyWi 4.0.  But my happiness soon faded away, as I found that the stupid HTC Desire was NOT able to access the MyWi access point.  This is totally lame, consider that the both the iPod Touch second gen and the DELL  M6400 has no problem accessing the WiMi.

In fact, I switched betwen all sorts of WiFi channel from1 to 6, 11, 10.  iPod Touch has zero problem accessing data, while the HTC Desire continue to fail on me.

Guess I just have to live with the fact the my HTC Desire sucks.

By the way, I set the Transmit Power to the lowest (30%), and iPod Touch still have no problem accessing it from 7 feet away, yield 230Kb/s.  Have to say that I am pretty impress with it.

Again, IF ONLY IT works with HTC Desire :-E .

OrbLive is not working on my iPod Touch iOS 3.1.2

I tried so many different versions of OrbLive on my iPod Touch, from 2.0.9.15 all the way to the latest 3.1.22, and they all failed on my iPod Touch gen2 running iOS 3.1.2.  So I guess I am giving up on using it on my iPod Touch now.

Jailbreaking on iPad 4.2.1

I was trying to update my friend's iPad from 3.2 to 4.2.1 with jailbreaking (for now, the thethered version).  Unfortunately, it didn't work out as nice as I expected.  Jailbreaking process didn't give me any error (I was using redsn0w_win_0.9.6b4), and all the machine setting was being preserved.  However all the jailbroken apps failed, and even the Cydia was not working.

Also I was not  able to get redsnow working on my Windows 7 64 bit machine.  But it works fine with my MacMini.

But then I thought, maybe it's because I wasn't doing a clean restore. So I did that, but still the Cydia was installed and not running properly ... .UNTIL I realize that in order to make the JB work, I have to run redsn0w_win_0.9.6b4, go thru the first 2 screens, and then select thether reboot.  After I did that (both on my Mac and Windows and they both work fine), I got Cydia and Installous running properly.

Well, at least now I know how to make JB working on 4.2.1.  Sweet.  I'll probably keep my iPad running 3.2 for a while though.  Don't see a huge reason rush to update.

And damn, come to think about it, maybe I really do not need to wipe my friend's iPad :-E
