MyWi and 3GUnrestrictor back in again

Well, I finally couldn't resist the temptation and put back in the 3GUnrestrictor and MyWi. If turns out it really blows up my iPad again, then ... shame on me :-m

Little Installous problem

I was pretty happy to find out that I could explicitly put the .ipa file in the Installous directory, have it show up in the Download list on iPad. But yesterday I found out that the stuff I put in the folder thru iPhone Explorer didn't show up properly. I even thought the ipa I put in has problem. But it turns out that the Installous instance seems has some problem. I think it was partly because the instance of running in background mode for a while and that seemed caused some problem. The strange thing seemed to be that I couldn't get it out of the background running mode.

Eventually I got things all working when I removed the files form the Downloads folder, and found then the entries still show up on the iPad UI. I clicked "install", the app crashed, and kicked me out. The next time I got back into the app, things seem back to normal.

Seriously, I am feeling a bit reluctant to run Installous in background.

Crash on iPad and restored

There's always a price for hacking a Apple device. Yesterday I was paying that price.

I got my iPad 3G before my trip, and it took me no time to jailbreak this bad boy, get AT&T unlimited data plan, and started using it like crazy. I installed these jailbreak only apps:

- Backgrounder (so that I can play Pandora at the back)
- 3G Unrestrictor (so that I can use Skype on 3G network)
- Installous

I didn't remember whether I accidentally turned on the "install with iTune" feature in Installous, though.

So everything worked out great while I was in the trip. When I got back home I was trying to sync my iPad back to my iTune on my MacMini at home, and found that even apps I got from Installous got sync to iTune. Interesting. But still so far not much problem at all.

I did realized that when I use iPhone explorer to get access to the root, I had problem. Later I realized that that's because I hadn't installed "afc2add". After I installed it, iPhone explorer has no problem getting to the real root.

Trouble came when yesterday I tried to sync my iPad to my iTune, and found that the apps I grabbed earlier yeterday kept being deleted during the sync process. I was pissed, and tried rebooting the iPad. And that's when everything went south.

After rebooted, the machine was in crazy mode:

  • It seemed to thought of itself as an iPhone or iPod Touch, as the bottom tray only occupy 1/4 of the screen!
  • The background photo is GONE, and replaced with totally black.
  • Screen orientation button turned into a sound mute button! And on the home screen, change orientation does NOT WORK.
  • iPhone mode doesn't work. The 2X button was gone, and apps behave strangly. Specifically, some area became unclickable.
  • Even the iPad native apps went crazy. Some portion of the screen didn't sense touch
The system was a total disaster. After tried and tried, I finally decided to restore the system. Luck that I let iTune backup my machine, caused after I re-stalled, everything went back to normal. even my manga in GoodReader is now behaving properly. It did, thought tool me almost 3+ hours to get everything back to normal. Crazy.

I also lost all the apps I downloaded, but thanks to this experience, I was forced to deal with the iPHone Explorer problem, and also found out that the apps downloaded can be found at:
/var/mobile/Documents/Installous/Downloads/

But in the meantime I am not going to install Backgrounder and 3
G Unrestrictor .I suspect that they are the reason why my iPad was freaked up. And also since I am not going to trip soon, these features doesn't seem as useful when I am use being at home or at work.
